Faculty - Prof. Yogi Amrit Desai
Yogiji is an internationally renowned yoga master, seminar leader, and author in the field of yoga and holistic living. He is widely recognized for carrying the true and authentic voice of yoga to the world. Some of the many honors he has been awarded for his unique contribution in the service to humanity are: Doctor of Yoga by His Holiness Jagadguru Śhankarāchārya, a rare Jagadāchārya title by the World Religious Parliament in New Delhi, and the Vishwa Yoga Ratna award by the President of India. He was also nominated for Padma Vibushan by the former Prime Minister of India, Śrī Chandra Shekhar.
Yogiji has done pioneering work, spreading and preserving the spiritual depth of yoga in the West since 1960. Following his Kundalini awakening, experienced by the grace of his guru, his Holiness Swami Śrī Kripalvanandji, he developed an approach to yoga that altered the popular notion of yoga as a physical discipline and reintroduced the spiritual depth to the practice of Hatha Yoga. Some of the books he has written to represent his approach are: Kripalu Yoga: Meditation in Motion, Amrit Yoga and Amrit Yoga and the Yoga Sūtras, as well as numerous other books, articles, CD’s and videos.
The Yoga Society that Yogiji founded in 1966 eventually grew to become the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, one of the largest centers of its kind in America. The methodology he developed in the practice of yoga became so widely adopted that today it is being taught by thousands of teachers in more than 30 countries around the world. Currently he is the founder and spiritual director of the Amrit Yoga Institute, Salt Springs, Florida, which offers the internationally respected Amrit Yoga Teacher Training program attended by teachers from many different yogic traditions currently practiced in America and abroad.
